SimWeather and Simple weather are a service and app for Android that provides (as the name suggests) very simple weather information.
Simple weather and clock widget app
A few years ago, we were looking for an app that would meet several (seemingly not too high) expectations. The app should have a clear, simple widget with non-irritating and non-sweet graphics. The data presented by the app should be concise and basic and should not be overloaded with excess information. The number of configuration options should be small and understandable. The app should be lightweight, not filled with ads in every possible place. One that could permanently reside on the phone and on its desktop. Unfortunately, none of the tested ones satisfied these needs, most of them had overwhelming functionality and others were large advertising containers. So we decided to write our own app that would implement the assumptions. Initially, only for our own use, but after some time it was published in the Play Store for everyone (a little later also in Huawei AppGallery and Amazon Appstore). We still support older devices (Android 4.1+, not many developers do this).
SimWeather website
Initially, it was just a landing page for the app with short information and links to download the app from stores or directly. However, we came to the conclusion that it would be useful to show this data in the browser in the same, very simplified way as in the app. This is an early version (alpha), to show weather conditions and forecast for your location, we try to detect the location based on IP or after obtaining permission in the browser. You can also search for a location by name.
Data source
Both the app and the website communicate with our service, which provides all the necessary data for their operation. This data is a compilation of data from various sources. The main providers of weather conditions and forecast data are OpenWeather and Met.no. When determining the names of locations, we are helped by the GeoNames databases and sometimes Google. We use our own algorithms to process data from many sources into one and serve the necessary portion to the end user.
Support
The application and its use are free of charge.
Unfortunately, maintaining our infrastructure and paying for data sources is not. That is why we are trying to maintain them in several ways. Donations can be made on the website or directly in the app. In the app, we especially recommend using a subscription, its additional benefit is disabling the advertising banner in the main window (we hope it is not very annoying, it also helps when there is no subscription).
We would like to thank everyone who has supported us so far!
Thanks to this, our kitties are not hungry! =^-^=
